Plus Size Winter Outfits Built Around Dresses

A warm plus size winter outfit starts with a long-sleeve dress, then adds fleece-lined tights sized for you, knee boots that close over your calves and a coat that covers the hem. Get those four right and the dress can be anything you like.

Plus size winter dresses

Look for long sleeves, a midi or maxi length and a waist that works with your shape: an empire waist, a wrap or an elastic waist. A soft fabric or an elastic waist makes a dress easier to layer under a coat than a stiff, fitted one.

Sizes go from Large Plus to 4X-Large Plus, it pulls on, and the listing says machine wash. The crew neck leaves room for a scarf, and the pockets are handy once your coat comes off.

For a dressier day, the RWJ maxi has a wrap V neck, long lantern sleeves and an elastic waist, in a polyester swiss dot, sizes Large Plus to 3X-Large Plus; the listing says machine wash. The maxi length covers your legs, so your tights don't need to be on show.

Plus size sweater dresses

A plus size sweater dress follows the same rules: long sleeves, midi length or longer, and a size range that reaches your size. Plus size fleece lined tights

Fleece-lined tights are what make a dress warm enough for real winter. Buy them by the size chart on the listing rather than your dress size, since tights charts often go by height and weight. A waistband that sits comfortably and a roomy gusset matter more than the color.

The HONENNA Queen tights are fleece-lined, in polyester and spandex, offered in 11 or more colors, in three plus sizes: 1X-2X, 3X-4X and 5X-6X. The listing says hand wash only.

The MERYLURE tights are fleece-lined too, but the listing calls them fake translucent: a sheer-looking style with the fleece inside, for when black opaque tights feel too heavy for the outfit. Wide-calf boots for winter dresses

Measure the widest part of your calf while wearing the tights you'll pair with the boots, then compare that with the boot's shaft circumference. Leave a little room so the zip closes without a fight.

The DREAM PAIRS wide-calf boots are knee-high, with a 17.5-inch shaft and a 16.5-inch calf circumference per the listing, and a faux-fur lining, in sizes 6 to 12.

The LifeStride Xtrovert boots are knee-high with a 17.87-inch shaft circumference, in sizes 5 to 12. The listing doesn't call them wide-calf, so that shaft number is the one to compare with your calf. Their wide option is a foot width, not a wider calf.

Plus size winter coats

Choose a coat that covers the hem, or leaves no more than a few inches of dress showing. Check the sleeves too: a coat that fits the body but stops short at the wrist lets the cold in.

The Madden Girl maxi puffer reaches past the knee and has an attached hood, in polyester, in sizes Small to 3X. The listing describes it as water and wind resistant, and says machine wash. Past the knee, it leaves less of a midi showing than a hip-length coat would.

The Pefflarge parka is a quilted winter coat in sizes 1X to 5X. The listing doesn't give its length, so compare it with your dress before you rely on it over a midi. The title calls it a down coat, but the only material it lists is polyester, so check the fill details on the listing if down matters to you.
