A pear shape is a gift for dresses, honestly. You have a waist to show off, and the cuts that suit you (A-line, fit-and-flare, wrap) are some of the easiest to find. This guide covers how to tell if you're a pear, the four dress shapes to start with, how to use the top half, the styles to rethink rather than avoid, and a small capsule to build from.
Pear and triangle are two names for the same body shape. The outline is narrower at the shoulders and bust, curves in at the waist, then widens at the hips and thighs, like a pear or the letter A.
To check, measure around your shoulders, bust, waist and hips with a soft tape, or look at yourself straight on in a fitted outfit in the mirror. If your hips are clearly the widest part and your shoulders sit inside the line of your hips, you're likely a pear. Your waist is usually well defined, and you may find that skirts and trousers fit at the waist but feel snug at the hip, or fit the hip and gape at the waist.
If your shoulders and hips are about even with a clearly smaller waist, you're closer to the hourglass body shape. Many people sit between the two, and the dresses overlap a lot. For the full measuring method and all five shapes side by side, see how to dress for your body type.
Pears come in every size and height. A petite pear and a tall plus-size pear share the same proportions, so the same dress shapes work for both.
Dresses for a pear-shaped body share three things: a fitted waist, a skirt that skims the hips without clinging, and something on top that widens or brightens the shoulder line. Four shapes do this especially well.
An A-line dress is the easiest dress for a pear shape, because the skirt starts flaring right where your hips do, so it falls over them instead of pulling across them.
Look for a skirt in a fabric with some body, like cotton, crepe, linen or a thicker knit. Very thin, clingy jersey follows every curve rather than skimming. Knee length and midi both work; a hem that ends just below the knee is the easiest to wear with most shoes.

A fit-and-flare dress stays close through the bodice and waist, then opens into a full skirt. It defines your waist clearly and gives your hips plenty of room.
Fit-and-flare dresses suit parties, weddings and dressier events. A pleated or circle skirt adds movement; a lightly structured bodice keeps the top neat. Check that the waist seam sits at your natural waist, not below it.

A wrap dress ties at your waist, which is exactly where a pear shape is narrowest. The crossover V-neck opens up the chest, and the skirt falls loosely over the hips.
Choose a wrap in a fabric with a little weight so the skirt drapes rather than clings, and check that the wrap overlaps enough at the skirt not to open when you walk. A faux wrap with a fixed front gives the same lines and stays put.

Necklines that run wide across the shoulders, like a boat neck, a wide square neck or an off-shoulder neckline, add width at the top of your frame. That balances wider hips and makes the whole outline look even.
These necklines look elegant on a pear shape because they show the collarbones and shoulders. An off-shoulder fit-and-flare dress is one of the best party dresses for this shape. Pair a boat neck with small earrings so the neckline does the work.

To dress a pear shape, put the detail on top and keep the bottom half simple. The eye goes to color, pattern, texture and shine, so placing them above your waist balances the outline naturally.
None of these are required. They're simply the easiest levers if you want a pear-shape outfit to look balanced.
GAXAYA

Some dresses take a little more thought on a pear shape, but that doesn't mean you can't wear them.
Bodycon and pencil dresses follow the hips closely, so they put the attention on the lower half. If you love them, pick a thicker fabric with some structure, like ponte or a double knit, and add a structured jacket or a statement neckline to bring the eye up. A darker skirt half on a color-block bodycon dress helps too.
Drop-waist dresses place the seam at the widest part of a pear shape. Look for a soft, loose drop waist with a flowing skirt rather than a tight band.
Sweater dresses can cling at the hip in thin knits. A chunkier knit that skims, belted at the waist, works better; how to style a sweater dress has belting and layering ideas.
Shift dresses with no waist can hang from the hips and hide your waist. A belt solves this in seconds.
If you want a short list to build from, these four cover most of the year.
Add pointed-toe flats or a low heel to all four. A pointed toe lengthens the leg line, which balances the hips without any height.
Semwiss

To dress for your body type, compare your shoulders, bust, waist and hips, then choose dress cuts that balance the widest part with the narrowest. A wrap or A-line dress works on most shapes; the details (neckline, waist seam, skirt volume) are where each shape differs.

An inverted triangle body shape means your shoulders or bust are wider than your hips, often with a straighter waist. Dresses that keep the shoulders simple, open the neckline with a V and add volume or detail below the waist suit this shape best.

Petite dresses are cut for women around 5'4" and under, with a shorter torso, shoulder-to-waist length, sleeves and hem, so the waist, darts and hem land in the right place. That's different from a small size: petite is about height and proportion, and many brands run petite in every size.
