Body shapes are a shortcut, not a verdict. Every shape is a good shape, and nothing here is a rule you have to follow. Think of it as a way to shop faster: once you know where your proportions sit, you can skip the cuts that fight them and go straight to the ones that work with them. This guide shows you how to find your shape, the dresses that suit almost everyone, a short answer for each of the five shapes, the details that change the look, and what to wear underneath.
All you need is a soft tape measure, a mirror and a fitted top or your underwear. Stand straight and relaxed, and keep the tape level and snug but not tight.
Then compare the numbers. You're looking for which measurement is the largest, whether your waist is clearly smaller than your bust and hips, and whether your shoulders and hips are about even. Different stylists draw the lines between shapes in slightly different places, so use this as a guide rather than a formula. Your eye in the mirror counts too.
Here's what each shape usually looks like, and the cuts to try first.
Plenty of people sit between two shapes. That's normal, and it simply means you can borrow from both lists.
Three cuts look good on nearly every shape, and they're the safe place to start if you're shopping without trying on.
The wrap dress crosses at the front and ties or fastens at the side. It marks the waist wherever you tie it, the V-neck opens up the chest, and the skirt skims over the hips rather than gripping them. A faux wrap gives the same lines with a zip or a fixed front, which some people find easier to wear all day.
The A-line dress skims the hips and thighs, suits most hem lengths and works in almost any fabric, from cotton to crepe.
The fit-and-flare stays close through the bodice and opens into a full skirt. It creates a clear waist on straighter shapes and follows the waist on curvier ones.
What these three share is a defined waist and a skirt that skims instead of clings. When in doubt, that combination is the one to look for.

Here's the short dress answer for each shape. Each one has its own full guide with more styles, necklines and outfits.
For a pear shape, choose dresses that define the waist, glide past the hips and bring some interest to the shoulders and neckline. A-line and fit-and-flare skirts glide over the hips without clinging. Boat necks, square necks, off-shoulder styles and sleeve details widen the shoulder line so it balances the hips. Put color, print or embellishment on the top half and keep the skirt simpler. Wrap dresses work well too, because they mark the waist. For the full method, styles to rethink and a four-dress capsule, see the full pear body shape guide.

Vintage A-Line Midi Dress
A sleeveless sweetheart-neck A-line midi with a smocked top and side zipper, offered in white-and-color prints. Listing details: polyester and elastane; sizes Small to XX-Large; machine wash.
Dresses for an hourglass figure follow the waist rather than hide it. Wrap dresses, sheath dresses, fit-and-flare and well-cut bodycon midis all trace your outline. The challenge usually isn't the style, it's fit: a dress that fits your bust may be loose at the waist, and button fronts can gape. Stretch fabrics, wrap closures and a tailor's help with the waist solve most of that. Boxy shifts and drop waists hide the waist, so they're the cuts to try last. More in the full hourglass body shape guide.
For an apple shape, look for dresses that float over the middle and show off your neckline and legs. An empire waist sits just under the bust, the narrowest point for many apple shapes, and the skirt falls freely from there. Swing and trapeze dresses fall straight from the shoulders, wrap dresses tie at your narrowest point, and V-neck shifts in a fabric with some weight skim rather than cling. Knee to midi hems show off the legs. The full list, with layering ideas, is in the full apple body shape guide.

V-Neck Empire-Waist Maxi Dress
A fit-and-flare maxi with an elastic empire waist, a V-neck overlap neckline and dolman short sleeves. Listing details: viscose and elastane; sizes X-Small to XX-Large; machine wash.
Dresses for a rectangle body shape go one of two ways. You can create a waist with a wrap, a belted shirt dress, ruching, tiers or a structured corset-style bodice. Or you can lean into the clean, straight line with a shift, a column or a slip dress, which can look sharp and modern on this shape. Both paths work; choose by mood and occasion. The two-path guide, including a belt guide, is in the full rectangle body shape guide.

Ruffle-Sleeve Fit-and-Flare Dress
A round-neck fit-and-flare dress with ruffle sleeves, a V back, side pockets and an invisible back zipper, in a knee length. Listing details: polyester and spandex; sizes Small to XX-Large; machine wash.
For an inverted triangle, keep the shoulders clean and let the skirt do the work, with flare, pleats or a print below the waist. If you have broad shoulders, a V-neck or scoop neck breaks up the width across the top, and plain set-in or raglan sleeves keep the line clean. A-line and full-skirt midis, drop waists and wrap dresses with a flared skirt add volume at the hip to balance the top half. Puff sleeves, boat necks and shoulder pads add width where you already have it. More in the full inverted triangle body shape guide.
Two dresses with the same silhouette can look completely different because of three details: the neckline, the waist seam and the hem.
The waist seam tells everyone where your waist is, so it's worth placing on purpose. A natural waist seam sits at your narrowest point and suits hourglass and pear shapes. An empire waist sits just under the bust, which suits apple shapes and petites who want longer-looking legs. A drop waist sits at the hip, which suits rectangles and inverted triangles but can shorten the legs. If a dress has no seam, a belt lets you choose the spot yourself.

Faux Leather Waist Belts, 3 Pack
Three 1.1-inch faux leather belts with gold buckles, in sizes that fit pants from 24 to 57 inches. Listing details: wipe with a dry cloth.
Hem length changes proportion more than most people expect. Knee length is the easiest to wear for most heights. A midi that ends at the narrowest part of the calf looks better than one that cuts across the widest part. Maxi lengths look longest with a little heel or a sandal that shows some foot. Petite and tall frames change the picture again, so try the length with the shoes you'll actually wear.
Good underwear does more for a dress than most people expect. Start with a bra that fits: the band snug and level, the cups smooth with no gaps or spilling, the straps doing only a little of the work. A V-neck, a halter and a strapless dress each need a different bra; types of bras explains which suits which neckline.
Under fitted dresses and thin fabrics, smooth underwear with flat or bonded edges avoids visible lines. A smoothing slip helps a dress glide over the body instead of catching on tights, and it adds a layer of comfort under unlined fabrics. Choose underlayers you can forget about after an hour; anything that pinches will show in how you stand.
Vanity Fair
Vanity Fair nylon full slip with lace trim, sizes S to 5X; the listing describes it as anti-static. Listing details: machine wash.
Body shape advice comes with a lot of old rules. Some of them are worth dropping.
The best way to know is still the simplest: try the cut on in your size, with the shoes and underwear you'd wear, before you judge it.

You have a pear (or triangle) body shape if your hips are noticeably wider than your shoulders and bust, usually with a defined waist. The dresses that work best fit at the waist, skim over the hips and draw the eye up with a wider neckline, sleeve detail or color on top.

An inverted triangle body shape means your shoulders or bust are wider than your hips, often with a straighter waist. Dresses that keep the shoulders simple, open the neckline with a V and add volume or detail below the waist suit this shape best.

Petite dresses are cut for women around 5'4" and under, with a shorter torso, shoulder-to-waist length, sleeves and hem, so the waist, darts and hem land in the right place. That's different from a small size: petite is about height and proportion, and many brands run petite in every size.
